COMPETITION FOR ELECTING RBA COUNCIL?

Belgrade, June 8, 2012 (Blic) - Members to the RBA Council might be elected in the future through competition. This was one of the options foreseen by the Draft Law on Electronic Media, presented by the working group of the Culture Ministry. According to Rade Veljanovski, one of the representatives of the working group, the aim is to ensure the independence of this regulator with this change of rules.

"After the competition, out of the shortlisted candidates for each of eight positions in the Council, three independent bodies, Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and the Commissioner for Independence and Protection of Citizens would propose two candidates each, out of which, one would be elected by the Parliament", Veljanovski said. The other option is that the Parliament elect members to the Council on the proposal of the authorized proposers.

"So far, three members of the RBA Council were elected on the proposal of the competent board of the Serbian Parliament. Our proposal foresees that the board may propose only two, out of which, one would be elected. The same applies to the provincial parliament, while the rest would be elected on the proposal of collective proposers", Veljanovski concluded.
