PETKOVIC: INDEPENDENCE OF RTS CRUCIAL
Belgrade, October 5, 2012 (RTS) - Radio Television Serbia is in a difficult situation due to low level of TV subscription fee collection.
The short-term solution to RTS financing problem may be to reach for the budget funds, as the collection of the fee is 35 percent. The model of collecting the fee together with the electricity bills has failed and the state will have to intervene somehow, the Culture Minister Bratislav Petkovic told RTS. The primary task is to ensure the financial independence of the public service, says Petkovic, adding that Croatian model should be reconsidered, as their fee collection for HRT is 98 percent.
"However, one cannot register a car or renew the passport if one has not paid the TV subscription fee. The state always has mechanisms that it may use to ensure the decent percentage of fee collection", the Minister said.
