INFORMATION BILL DEBATE FINISHES

BELGRADE, October 27, 2004 (Beta) - The Serbian Parliament finished debate on the government's Freedom of Access to Information of Public Importance Bill on Wednesday. In the course of the debate, all parties in the parliament have said that they will support the legislation because it introduces new rights and freedoms for the public and imposes more obligations on state bodies. However, the Serbian Radical Party has said that it will only vote for adoption of the bill if a number of amendments it has tabled are adopted. A total of about forty amendments to the bill have been submitted. The parliament today finished debate on the a draft resolution on electing a ninth member of the Conflict of Interest Committee and a draft resolution on establishing a polls commission to identify irregularities in Belgrade's recent local government elections. The parliament will vote on all the legislation debated in this session on Tuesday, November 2.
