COMPETENCE THE ONLY CRITERIA

PANCEVO, December 6, 2004 - The media section of G17 Plus' Pancevo branch has issued a statement saying that the party will not interfere in the appointment of a new director for RTV Pancevo. G17 Plus has invited all other parties to forget their political affinities and interests so that the commission can make the most rational selection and propose a candidate to the parliament who will be approved by the majority. In this way the appointment would be made on the criterion of the candidate's arguments, competence and knowledge, and not by his political leanings. G17 Plus deputy leader Branko Krsmanovic explained the party's position at a press conference on Friday, saying that this would be the first media test for politicians in Serbia, warning that the charade of the previous competition must be avoided. On that occasion no one was appointed out of eight candidates. Krsmanovic also noted that RTV Pancevo was experiencing major difficulties and was in a critical financial situation. "G17 Plus councillors will not vote for the proposed candidates if they are not convinced of their ability and competence," he added.
