MEETING WITH BROADCAST COUNCIL NOMINEES

BELGRADE, February 10, 2005 – Members of the Serbian Parliament’s Culture and Information Committee have called the meeting with the Broadcast Council nominees for tomorrow. All sixteen candidates are expected to attend. The public discussion with the proposed candidates is foreseen by the Broadcast Act with the aim to get an insight into their competence and ability to manage their obligations in the Council. It is however hard to say when the eight members for the Broadcast Council will be elected out of proposed 16 candidates. President of the Culture and Information Committee Aleksandar Lazarevic said that the election of members depended on the outcome of the Parliamentary session, but as the work pace of the sessions could not be predicted, he was not in position to specify when the issue would come up on the agenda. Lazarevic added that “it could only be presumed that the work of the Parliament regarding this issue was expected to be concluded by the end of February, meaning that we might have the Broadcast Council formed by March.” Lazarevic further explained that the Culture and Information Committee carried out its part of the job on time, and that the reasons for such long delays were to be found in the temporary cease of work of the Serbian Parliament in December. On the lists, which the Committee had affirmed at the beginning of November, were the following candidates: Aleksandar Vasic, Ljiljana Djurdjevac, Bojan Jovanovic, Vladimir Cvetkovic, Nenad Cekic and Vukoman Covic. Miroljub Radojkovic and Svetozar Stojanovic were nominated by rectors of the Universities, while Slobodan Djoric and Milorad Jaksic are the candidates proposed by the professional associations. National non-governmental organizations nominated Velimir Milosevic and Isabela Kisic, while the religious and holy institutions proposed bishop of Jegar Porfirije Peric and Aleksandra Jankovic. Vojvodina candidates are Goran Karadzic and Dusan Marinkovic.
